WESTERN DIGITAL PURPLE 2TB 5400 RPM SURVEILLANCE DESKTOP HARD DRIVE WITH 256MB CACHE
WD PURPLE 2TB 5400 RPM drives are engineered specifically for surveillance to help withstand the elevated heat fluctuations and equipment vibrations within NVR environments. An average desktop drive is built to run for only short intervals, not the harsh 24/7 always-on environment of a high-definition surveillance system. With WD Purple, you get reliable, surveillance-class storage that’s tested for compatibility in a wide range of security systems. Exclusive AllFrame™ technology helps reduce frame loss and improve overall video playback.https://youtu.be/iFFQHm3uuQc

Use Cases
24/7 CCTV recording: The WD Purple 2TB hard drive is designed for continuous video recording in compatible DVR and NVR systems. It suits a home, shop, office or other security installation that needs footage stored around the clock.
Adding storage to a recorder: Use it to add recording capacity to a compatible surveillance recorder, or replace an existing drive. Check that the recorder accepts a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive and supports a 2TB drive before ordering.
Recording from multiple cameras: WD rates this model for up to 64 single-stream HD cameras, subject to the recorder and recording settings. That figure describes supported camera streams—it does not mean 2TB will retain footage from 64 cameras for a particular number of days. The drive’s AllFrame technology is designed to help reduce dropped video frames during surveillance recording.
Common Buying Questions
Is this hard drive suitable for a CCTV DVR or NVR?
Yes. WD Purple drives are built for mainstream surveillance DVR and NVR systems that operate continuously. Confirm your recorder’s drive-size, SATA and capacity requirements before purchase. WD
How many days of CCTV footage can 2TB store?
There is no fixed number. Retention depends on the number of cameras, video resolution, bitrate, frame rate, compression, and whether recording is continuous or motion-triggered. Check these settings in your DVR or NVR to estimate how much storage your system needs.
Can I use it as a normal desktop PC hard drive?
It uses a standard 3.5-inch SATA connection and can be installed in a compatible desktop PC. Its intended use is continuous surveillance recording; for a general-purpose PC drive, choose based on your main workload rather than the Purple name alone.
What do the 256MB cache and 5400 RPM rating mean?
These are specifications of the drive listed here. The 256MB cache is onboard buffer memory; 5400 RPM describes its rotational speed class. Neither figure alone determines how many days of footage you can store. WD lists the 2TB, 256MB variant as WD22PURZ—confirm the model number on the product label before adding it to your listing. Is this an SSD, and can it be installed in a laptop?
No. It is a 3.5-inch internal hard disk drive. It is intended for equipment with a compatible 3.5-inch drive bay, SATA data connection and power connection; it will not fit a standard laptop drive bay. Ref: documents.westerndigital.com
Can this drive record AI camera footage?
It can store video streams from a compatible recorder, but it does not perform AI detection or analytics itself. Those functions depend on the cameras, recorder and software.
Listing accuracy check: Your current description says the 2TB drive has vibration-resistant components and supports more than eight drive bays. WD’s data sheet for the matching WD22PURZ says no rotational-vibration sensor and up to eight drive bays. Remove those two claims if WD22PURZ is the model you sell. Ref: Clarion Computers
